Pilgrimage to Nepal

Shamanic Expedition and Training
February 5th to 20th 2011

Led by Larry G. Peters Ph.D Anthropologist
& Susan Feinbloom Rev, LCSW, C.Hom

This will be a sacred journey to Nepal for deep immersion into the culture, Spirituality, and healing practices of Tibetan, Tamang, and other tribal shamans.

Shamanism in Nepal is mainstream. It is humankind’s first spiritual discipline. It exists alongside medicine as a viable healing system. Shamans are consulted by royalty, priests and laymen alike for healing, divination and as intermediaries with the spirits.

Participants will sit in circle with master shamans from a culture globally and spiritually at the farthest corner of the world. Experienced assistants and interpreters will facilitate in helping us understand the culture, customs, myths, rituals, and healing practices in heart to heart conversations with shamans.

General Itinerary

The Tibetan Shamans will be teaching some very sacred techniques of healing and calling in the deities they work with. Two of the Shamans practice and have brought forth into present time some of the most ancient techniques of healing. They will also be teaching divination techniques with the malas (a necklace of 108 beads). These beads help maintain the trance and are used in healing, divination and connecting to the spirits.

We will travel to rural Pokhara where we will meet up with the Tibetan Shamans. Here we will experience their teachings about Tibetan Shamanic practices of healing and trance. We will have quality time with the shamans to learn about their life stories and share experiences.

We will be in Pokhara for the first part of the trip. There will be time for shopping for thankas, statues and other sacred objects. Day treks are also available here.

Healings and consultations are available with any of the numerous shamans from whom we will be learning and who will be journeying with us to the numerous sacred shrines in the Kathmandu and Pokhara valleys.

We will visit several sacred shrines:

  • Pashupati, a sacred worshipping site for Shiva, the most important male deity in the Kathmandu valley. He is “Lord of the Animals” or “Lord of the Soul”.
  • Bodhnath, the Buddhist Stupa
  • Svayambunath Temple, the “Gubajus”, priests, astrologers, and healers among the Newari people are said to have built the stupas when the hills rose out of the sea. Here they invoke the gods and make pujas in their honor.
  • Bhaktapur –the medieval city of temples

For the last part of the trip we will be in the Kathmandu area visiting Aama Bombo (Mother Shaman), a famous healer who embodies Kali (a fierce aspect of the goddess Parvati, Shiva’s wife). Aama treats as many as 50 people a day, often conducting dramatic healing rituals into the night. We will have the opportunity to observe her healing clinics.
